Deadbolt Locks: Choosing the Perfect Security Product for Your Home

by Glen Shelton

Your home security will depend on numerous factors such as location, surrounding and external security. However, the most critical element that you should think about is the entrance lock. Your local residential area might be secure, but if your locks are weak, any opportunistic intruder can waltz into your building. Therefore, you should consider upgrading your locks by installing a deadbolt lock. This type of product is designed to secure the entrance using a lock cylinder that can only be rotated using the designated key. Here are some aspects that you should think about when buying a home deadbolt lock.

Single and Double Cylinder Locks

You should compare the single and double cylinder locks before selecting the right match. Both of these deadbolts have benefits and disadvantages, so the best choice will depend on your requirements and preference. The single cylinder lock is constructed with a keyhole on the outer side and a latch mechanism on the inner face. This design will only require operation with the key from outside. Unfortunately, if your door has glass panels, the intruder can break and open the latch. The double cylinder has keyholes on both deadbolt faces, so the key will be required for any operation. This configuration is secure and reliable. However, you might have trouble exiting the building quickly if an emergency arises.

Bolt Structure

The structure of the actual deadbolt in the lock will determine the reliability of the new product. Therefore, you should check the specifications to ensure that the bolt can withstand any attempts at infiltration. Look for locks with long deadbolts that will bridge the door and the frame and extend significantly into that frame. These are less likely to sustain damage when exposed to impact or pressure. You should also make sure that the bolt is resistant to sawing. Ideally, these components should be made from resilient materials like stainless steel and high-quality brass. There are also locks with special pins that spin the bolts in position. This movement will counteract the motion of a sawing tool.

Strike Plate Strength

The strike plate is an important component in determining the strength of the lock. Basically, this is the deadbolt element that attaches to the door frame and holds the bolt when the door is closed. If this element is fragile, the door can be forced open by applying repeated impact. Therefore, choose a product with heavy gauge steel plates to prevent distortion under pressure. Additionally, these should be attached with long screws to limit dislodgement.
