4 Tips for Building an Outdoor Awning over Your Patio

by Glen Shelton

An awning can make your patio more functional and allow you to have protection from the sun and rainfall. If you are looking to install an awning over your patio, it is possible for you to build one on your own. When you are building an awning over your patio, there are a few helpful tips that will make the process much smoother.

Consider the Size

It is always important to consider the size of your awning in relation to your patio. It is often preferred to build an awning that only covers a portion of the patio. Attaching the awning to the exterior of your home and spanning out over a portion of the patio is often the best design to follow when building your own awning. You need to take accurate measurements for the amount of space that you want your awning to cover.

Use Flagpole Holders

If you decide to build an awning that attaches to your home directly, you can create the awning using flagpole holders. You can simply take PVC pipe and insert it into the front and two side openings of the awning. You can then use connectors at the ends of the pipe and adhere them to the flagpoles. It is possible to attach the flagpole brackets directly to your home by drilling holes. Just be sure that you determine the height that you desire before you begin drilling. Since the flag poles are directly secured to the home and connected to the fabric, it will be durable and not sway due to high winds.

Use Sewing Skills

Sewing the material that you use to create the awning involves creating pockets on each side. The pockets that you sew are required for you to insert PVC pipe into when you are creating the structure that will stabilise the awning. It is important to measure the width of the PVC pipe before you begin sewing. In most cases, the pocket does not need to be larger than an inch, so that it can securely hold the PVC pipe into place. However, the actual measurement of the pipe will influence the size of the pocket that you create.

Durability of Material

It is important that you choose an awning material that is designed to be durable. If you live in a region that has a harsher climate, you most likely should build and awning using Polycarb panels. Vinyl or opaque materials can be used when you live in a region that has optimal weather conditions year round.
