Submersible Vs External Pumps for Pond Water Circulation

A pump is integral in keeping the pond in your garden healthy. For instance, the pump keeps the water circulating. This prevents mosquitoes from breeding in that water. It also boosts the oxygen content of that pond, thereby enabling aquatic life (such as fish) to thrive in your garden pond. This article discusses two types of pond pumps (submersible pumps and external pumps) that you can install to circulate the water in your pond. Submersible Pond Pumps

This pump is inserted in the deepest part of your pond. It is very good if you want to keep your pond looking as natural as possible. The submersible pump will not be visible so the pond will look natural. These pumps are also easy to install. This is because they do not have an extensive network of wires or hoses that you need to run. They are also quieter than other pumps. This limits noise distractions within your garden.

However, submersible pond pumps have some drawbacks. There is a risk that they can leak oil into the pond and kill the aquatic life there. Select a submersible pump that does not require an oil coolant if you want to avoid facing this risk. Submersible pumps also require more energy to operate when compared to other types of pond pumps. They also require more routine maintenance than other types of pumps (such as external pumps).

External Pond Pumps

These are installed outside the pond. A system of hoses enables them to circulate the water in the pond. These pumps are more energy-efficient when compared to submersible pumps. They also perform better in larger ponds. Consult the pump supplier for the actual size of pond where this pump would be ideal. External pumps require less maintenance work than submersible pumps.

The drawbacks of these pumps include the noise they generate as they work. This noise can disturb any wildlife present in your pond or garden. You also need to make a special arrangement to ensure that the pump is protected from moisture. For instance, you may have to construct a special shed/shelter for the pump. These pumps can easily blow a motor in case power goes off (then returns after a while). This is especially true for external pumps that are not self-priming (retaining water to aid it as the pump kicks into operation).
