How To Choose The Right Air Conditioner

by Glen Shelton

The summer heat can get quite uncomfortable, and you really don't have to persevere through it when you can get an energy efficient air conditioner to keep you cosy. Picking the right air conditioner is an investment worth making. To ensure the most reliable comfort, here are some tips you can use before purchasing one.

Energy efficiency

Check the EER, which is the energy efficiency ratio that is gotten by comparing the cooling capacity of the AC to the input power it receives. The higher this figure is, the more efficient the conditioner, so check the guide for the unit to find out its EER. When doing your shopping, aim to get an air conditioner with an EER of at least 11, and you'll be assured of high energy efficiency. An additional bonus would be the Energy Star label, which will assure you that the AC has met all the necessary energy efficient standards and guidelines.

Size your room

You'll need to take measurements of your room and calculate its square footage. Getting a smaller AC would not properly cool you off, and having an oversized one simply wastes energy. Use a tape measure and get the dimensions; then, depending on the shape of your room, get the area. Air conditioning systems are measured in British thermal units (BTUs) per hour, and you can check The United States Department of Energy Star website to get the appropriate system for your home. However, it's best if you call a professional for this task. The contractor will also consider the window sizes, floor space and even the local climate to give you the best AC.

Check your home's electrical system

It is also necessary that your home's power can match the AC's power requirements. Room unit ACs operate at either 115v or 230v. Standard 115v units don't pose much of a challenge during installation. However, large 115 volt units may need a dedicated circuit. The 230v units usually require a special circuit to boost safety and prevent any electrical mal-functionality.

Features of the AC

You should look out for any plus features the AC may have to ease your work. An easily sliding filter is important for efficiently cleaning the AC, and a readout for the temperature setting of the thermostat would also be of great help. If you have a long room and you are going to install the air conditioner at the narrow side, then you need to get one with a 'turbo' fan that will further propel the air.
