Advantages of Choosing A-Grade Teak Furniture

by Glen Shelton

The grading of wood is important when purchasing teak furniture. While this material is highly desirable because of its incredible properties, the pieces sold have dissimilarities in terms of quality. A-grade teak is the most expensive type and it is identified as the best natural material when compared to the B and C variants. It is ideal for production of both indoor and outdoor furniture. Consider these main benefits of choosing to use this high grade wood.

Resilience

The A-grade teak timber is taken out of the center of the trunk when the tree is at least twenty years old. This part is referred to as the heartwood and it is exceptionally sturdy and resilient. The pieces obtained are typically very dense and the wood grains are close together. Natural oil and rubber compound content is high in the wood and it is responsible for the teak furniture's ability to withstand harsh conditions. The lack of water retention by this wood keeps the products from warping and cracking, a common problem with natural furniture materials. The oils also act as natural preservative and therefore, the wood is resistant to rotting and is unattractive to pests such as termites and borers. This coupled with the hardness ensures that the premium furniture provides quality and long-term service.

Natural Appeal

The visual impact of A-grade teak is incomparable and inimitable. There is virtually no knotting in the wooden pieces and the oil content is evenly distributed in this core. The lumber has an even and close grain with a beautiful golden hue. The density of the teak also means that the surface is smooth which limits splintering as well as the unattractive fuzziness in poor quality wood. If a sealant or color retention treatment is not applied on outdoor teak furniture, some changes will occur. Usually, a silvery shade develops evenly on the surface and it is considered quite attractive. The choice on whether to retain the natural honey-like color or to let the new tone to develop will depend on the homeowner's preference.

Maintenance

The maintenance required for A-grade teak furniture is low when compared to the other natural materials. Periodic cleaning will keep the wood in great condition and sealant may be used to protect the items from natural weathering. With this minimal servicing, the furniture is expected to last for many generations without any damage. This is a valuable investment that can be passed down to heirs along with the pertinent estate.
