4 Tips for Decorating Your Patio on a Budget

by Glen Shelton

If you have a small patio in your backyard but no money to spend on expensive décor items, don't fret. There are many ways to decorate the space even with a small budget. Here are some simple ways to add some colour and style to the patio without spending too much of your savings.

Plant a Vertical Garden

There is no reason you need to go out and buy expensive accessories to decorate your patio. You can have colourful potted plants and flowers that not only give you something beautiful to look at but offer some cheap décor as well. Vertical gardens can either be made with a fence if you have one around your patio or by standing up wooden pallets. Pallets are free if you check nearby warehouses to ask for any they have leftover. You can leave it as-is for a natural look or spray paint it white or another colour. Find some inexpensive and small pots at your local thrift store or flea market, then place small plants or flowers inside. Hang them on the pallets or fence and you have yourself a vertical garden.

Add Patio Lighting

You can also add some lighting to your patio to increase its overall ambiance. Strings of lights tend to be very affordable and come in a wide selection. You can get standard twinkle lights, similar to the ones you use during the holidays, or even re-use your holiday lights to keep them out year-round. You can also get different shapes of string lights, such as globes, stars, butterflies, or hearts. Choose all white lights or multi-coloured strands of lights for a different effect. Keep in mind you want the lights to be labeled for outdoor or indoor/outdoor use.

Spray Paint Your Patio Furniture

If you have outdated patio furniture, there is no reason to buy brand new furniture unless it is broken or in serious disrepair. If it is simply chipped and the colour is starting to fade, you can make it look new again by spray painting it. When you have broken furniture, you might be better off purchasing inexpensive patio furniture from a nearby swap meet or secondhand store, then spray painting it a fresh colour.

Add a Patterned Rug

One of the biggest impacts on the overall look of your patio is to add a large patterned rug. While rugs are often expensive, outdoor rugs tend to cost less. You can purchase a secondhand rug or find one on sale, adding to the appearance of your patio without spending too much.
